Greta Cahill never believed she would leave her village in the west of Ireland until she found herself on a ship bound for New York, along with her sister Johanna and a boy named Michael Ward. Labeled a "softheaded goose" by her family, Greta discovers that in America she can fall in love, raise her own family, and earn a living. Though she longs to return and show her family what she has made of herself, her decision to spare her children knowledge of a secret in her past forces her to keep her life in New York separate from the life she once loved in Ireland, and tears her apart from the people she is closest to.
Even 50 years later, when the Ireland of her memory bears little resemblance to that of present day, she fears that it is still possible to lose all when she discovers that her children with the best of intentions have conspired to unite the worlds she's so carefully kept separate for decades. A beautifully old-fashioned novel, The Walking People is a debut of remarkable range and power.

The Walking People (Audible Audio Edition) Mary Beth Keane Sile Bermingham Audible Studios Books Reviews
Being Scots Irish myself, this one gave me much to consider about my ancestors and current day family. How cultures grow, spread and multiply with the accompanying gifts of traditions, habits and perspectives is made real in this engaging story of the old country and immigrants headed west.
Better than her book FEVER. Believable characters and the interesting plot. A story about how life just happens and time passes as one is busy with day to day living.
I enjoyed the history involved, especially the immigration. I think there could have been more character development. It isn't a book I would read again, or move on should it become a series.
This book was a real page turner. . The characters were so interesting and complex. A lovely story of a family of who leave Ireland for Australia and America. The main characters are the ones from America and focuses on their assimilation and the way they interact with the family left behind and the issues they face here
Very well done. There are also some surprises, including the ending
Kudos to Mary Beth Keane
I was surprised! Some books about the Irish turn to silly syrup, other are full of gloom and poverty war and death. This book is a wonderful read. A well written life story filled with the trials and joys of this family unusual though it is. It's descriptions are vivid, lifelike. Greta at first thought to be the victim becomes a force and her husband finds his sense of place in his family. Well worth the look into where they came from and how they survived.
Most people know of the great exodus from Ireland because of the Potato Famine and many wonderful stories have been written about those times. But this story is about a more recent time when life in Ireland was still difficult and young people immigrated to the United States or Australia or Great Britain for a better life . This story of two sisters from the West of Ireland is a story I could not wait to finish and one I simultaneously did not want to ever finish!
This book was definitely worth reading for me, but there were some long, dry periods that had me skimming through. The basic story is excellent and the two main characters, Greta and Michael, will stay with me long after I've forgotten many of the other details. I was disappointed in the ending and thought perhaps the author will continue the story in a sequel. Had it not been for the long, unnecessary dry spells, I would have given it five stars. In my mind while reading, the story was drifting between 3, 4 and 5 stars.
